    Facts about vapor barriers

    Posted In: Uncategorized by cooldude

Vapor barriers are those materials that stop the diffusion of water vapor into different surfaces like wood, concrete, walls, ceilings and floors. Though vapor barriers claim to restrict vapors from diffusing into surfaces, not all provide the same kind of defense against vapors. It is for this reason that vapor barriers are more commonly known as vapor retarders.

There are three types of vapor retarding substances and they can be recognized through some standard tests. Here are the three types:
    • Permeable: these are those materials that are known to allow vapors to diffuse through them. They are therefore weak vapor retarders.
    • Semi-permeable: they allow vapor to diffuse through, but only a little. Semi-permeable vapor retarders allow slow vapor diffusion over time.
    • Impermeable: they have an US perm level of less than one and are the most effective vapor retarders. Some examples are oil based paints, vinyl wall covering etc.
